Stone Town

Unguja Island

Welcome to Stone Town

Zanzibar's Stone Town, also known as Mji Mkongwe (Swahili for "old town"), is the ancient neighbourhood of Zanzibar City, Tanzania's capital. This is one of the contemporary world's oldest towns. The village was built during the Oman governing period in the nineteenth century. Ng'ambo refers to the city's newest section (Swahili for "the other side").

 Stone Town

Stone Town is on the western side of the largest island in the Zanzibar Archipelago, which is called Unguja. As the historic capital of the Zanzibar Sultanate and thriving centre of the spice trade as well as slave traffic in the nineteenth century, it kept its status as Zanzibar's principal city throughout the British administration.

When Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined together to form the United Republic of Tanzania, Zanzibar kept its semi-independent status, and Stone Town became the center of local government. Stone Town is an East African city of significant historical and aesthetic significance. Its architecture, largely from the nineteenth century, shows the numerous influences that underpin Swahili culture, giving it a distinct blend of Arab, Persian, Indian, and European components.

As a result, the town was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Stone Town is also a popular tourist destination in Tanzania, and tourism contributes significantly to the local economy.
