Changuu Island, also known as Prison Island, is a small island located off the coast of Stone Town, Zanzibar. This place earned its nickname due to its historical role as a former detention facility for rebellious slaves during the 1860s. Situated approximately 5.6 kilometres northwest of Stone Town, a mere 30 to 40 minutes away by boat, Changuu Island has become a sought-after spot for tourists due to its pristine waters and stunning coral reefs.
A wealthy Arab merchant previously owned Prison Island and used it as a slave detention facility. General Lloyd Mathews acquired the property and transformed it into a quarantine station to safeguard Zanzibar from contagious illnesses.
Contrary to popular belief, it never used to be a prison island. It served as a quarantine station for yellow fever, leprosy, and pandemic cases in the late 19th century. Changuu Island now houses the endangered Aldabra giant tortoises, peacocks, and a variety of small animals. Additionally, it is a favourite spot among tourists looking for a peaceful getaway from the busy atmosphere of Zanzibar.
The island is famous for its population of Aldabra giant tortoises, which were a generous gift from the late 19th-century British governor of the Seychelles. This species is now considered vulnerable and has been added to the IUCN Red List.
Visitors can also enjoy swimming, snorkelling, and sunbathing on the beautiful beaches of Changuu Island, offering a tranquil escape just a quick boat ride away from the vibrant city of Stone Town.
Changuu Island is open to visitors all year round. Nonetheless, the most favourable period to visit is during the dry season, which occurs from June to October and January to early March. Make sure to plan your trip ahead of time, as this is a sought-after period for tourists to explore Changuu Island.
