10 Days Gombe & Mahale National Parks Semi-Luxury Trip

Overview

This 10-day expedition combines visits to Gombe and Mahale National Parks, two of the best places to see chimpanzees in their native environments and targets of conservation efforts.
Gombe Streams National Park.
Gombe National Park, Tanzania’s smallest park, is a unique chimpanzee habitat on the sandy northern coast of Lake Tanganyika, surrounded by rocky hills and river basins. The chimpanzees there are used by human visitors because of Jane Goodall’s outstanding research. The behaviour research initiative she started in 1960 is now the world’s longest-running study of its sort. Kremlin, an adolescent when Goodall first arrived in Gombe, is the last known member of the original community.
Gombe Stream National Park is located in western Tanzania, 16 kilometres from Kigoma Town and the border with the Congo. For many years, local primatologist Jane Goodall studied and worked in this park. You could see more of her than anybody else in the park.
Mahale Mountains National Park.
Situated south of Kigoma Town in western Tanzania lies the breathtaking Mahale Mountains National Park. Along its western border lies Lake Tanganyika, Africa’s best chimpanzee-trekking destination and the world’s longest, second-deepest, and a least-polluted freshwater lake. Some of Africa’s remaining wild chimpanzees live in this park and its neighbouring Gombe, where they have been acclimated to human visitors since the 1960s as part of a Japanese study project. There are few places on the continent more unusual for a safari than this one. An exquisite powder-white sand beach and towering mountains draped in lush tropical vegetation characterise the lake’s shoreline. Massive blue butterflies flutter over the creeks, bringing the forest to life with their fluttering wings.
The Mahale Mountains National Park is a must-see for any traveller planning a safari in Tanzania. It was founded to save the area’s population of chimpanzees but is now more known for its breathtaking sunsets over Lake Tanganyika. The park is teeming with wildlife; there are rivers and waterfalls galore, and the lake is bordered by some of the finest stretches of white sand you’ll ever see. The Tongwe people revere the tallest mountain in the park, Mount “Nkungwe,” which stands at 8,069 feet.
The park is home to a wide variety of habitats, including grasslands, rainforests, alpine bamboo, and woodlands. Among the roughly 50 species of animals that call the area home, monkeys and apes are by far the most numerous.
